Copella nattereri und Copella meinkeni

We import quite often from the Rio Negro in Brazil a beautiful tetra of the splashing tetra group, which has usually five rows of red dots along the flanks. This up to 6 cm long species is known for decades in the hobby under the name of Copella nattereri. It took until the year 2006 that the tetra specialists Axel Zarske and Jaques Géry found out that the species described as Copella nattereri was practically not present in the hobby and that the red spotted Copella was not known to science yet! So Zarske and Géry described the long time known Copella finally as Copella meinkeni. The "real" Copella nattereri is also an extremely beautiful fish, which we can offer currently from Peru. Once one has seen the fish alive it is almost impossible to confuse it with C. meinkeni. In C. nattereri there is a black band along the flanks that contains only one row of relatively large, deep red spots. Both Copella species are kept best in realtively dark aquaria that should be decorated with dead leaves, peat and aquatic plants. Here they develope their full coloration. Basically these fish are peaceful and accept any type of usual fish food. Males become bigger than the females and have enlarged fins. For our customers: Copella meinkeni has code 219802, Copella nattereri code 219813 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade. Lexikon: Copella: means "small Copeina". Copeina is another genus of tetra. meinkeni: dedication name for Hermann Meinken (1896 - 1976), one of the most outstanding German aquarists of the 20th century. nattereri: dedication name for Johann Natterer (1787 - 1843), who collected for 18 years animals in South America and discovered many new species. Suggestion of common names: Copella menkeni: Red Spotted Copella; Copella nattereri: Snow White Copella Text & photos: Frank Schäfer
